Foot Hygiene

Foot hygiene is very important in terms of our general health so looking after one’s feet helps you look after yourself.

What is more most foot hygiene is common sense. Remember to wash your hands after you have dealt with your feet.

One should always remember the following and try to bear them in mind:

Wash your feet regularly and dry thoroughly taking care to dry between the toes.

Soak your feet in warm water once a day if possible and then gently exfoliate using a foot file – filing in one direction only, dry and then moisturise your feet. This helps keep hard skin and calluses at bay or away. Do not cut hard skin or calluses with scissors.

Trim your toe nails regularly to prevent in-growing toe nails.

Treat hard skin, calluses and any foot problem when they are first seen this stops your problem becoming worse

In communal changing rooms and swimming pools try to wear something on your feet as these are places where infections are easily spread.

When choosing socks try to use those made from natural breathable materials ie cotton, bamboo, wool. Do not wear socks that are too tight or small as these encourage your feet to overheat and constrict the delicate bones.

The same goes with shoes – leather or some of the new breathable synthetics are best. If your shoes get wet, remove and allow to dry as soon as practical. Do not wear again until thoroughly dry. Remember to only wear shoes that fit you and do not pinch – if possible avoid high heels and tight toes! Make sure trainers are appropriate for the use.

If you have orthotics use them this prevents pressure in the wrong places on your foot and helps your gait and back especially your hips and knees.
